7 so he explained it to them: “I tell you the truth, I am the gate for the sheep. 8 All who came before me were thieves and robbers. But the true sheep did not listen to them. 9 Yes, I am the gate. Those who come in through me will be saved. They will come and go freely and will find good pastures. 10 The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life. (John 10:6-10)
Just before this passage, Jesus describes himself as a shepherd, caring for and loving us, His sheep. In this passage, Jesus describes himself as the gate, the way to salvation. Jesus makes it clear that as both the gate and the shepherd has the best interest of the sheep at heart. He is not like Satan the thief, whose purpose is to steal, kill and destroy. Instead his purpose is to bring us life-a rich and satisfying life!
Prayer: Dear God, thank you for sending Jesus as our Shepherd to care for us and as our Gate to lead us to salvation. Protect us Lord from the evil one who comes to kill, steal and destroy! Help us to remain in your fold and invite others to accept Jesus and join the fold as well.
